Weddings

Weddings are the number one most common reason people get started taking dance lessons. Whether you are getting married, a close relative, part of the wedding party or an invited guest, learning to dance will make every wedding reception you attend a lot more fun!

FOR THE HAPPY COUPLE

Stop and think… what percentage of celebration time on your big day will feature your DJ or band playing music with an open dance floor? If you’re like most couples who host a banquet style reception, you may have three to four hours (or more!) of music and dance time. That is huge part of your night! And it’s the best part, in many ways, because all the planning and logistics are over, and now it’s time to let loose, celebrate and enjoy. Even many couples opting for the new “brunch wedding” trend still choose to create a memorable entrance by doing a first dance when they arrive. Dance lessons are one of the best investments you can make for your wedding and your marriage; with the exception of photography (the other best investment!), everything else you buy for your wedding is gone the next day.

The flowers, the decorations, the venue, the food (and let’s face, almost no one ever wears the dress again!)… It all disappears at the end of the night, but learning to dance lasts a lifetime. Not only does it make your wedding more enjoyable, but you can dance at EVERY wedding you and your spouse attend for the rest of your lives. And every time you hear that First Dance Song, whether it’s in your living room, at a friend’s wedding, in an elevator, or at your 50th anniversary, you can hold each other close and have the greatest dance flashback of your lives.

Just like married couples, First Dances come in all shapes and sizes. Many couples wish for a First Dance that’s basic and fun, something that’s simple, but an upgrade from tired “high school hug & sway.” Other couples want a dance that’s more dynamic, with several highlight moments to impress their guests. And finally, some people want THE WORKS! A First Dance that is planned out from start to finish, that fully expresses both their personalities and their favorite moments in the song. Whatever your style, a personal teacher can collaborate with you to craft a First Dance with a customized series of lessons.

Some couples also want to do more than just one dance! I’ve worked with couples who do an energetic dance when they first arrive at the reception, and a more romantic slow dance to kick off the dance party portion of the night. Some couples do a “getaway dance” as a send-off right before they leave the reception. Most brides and grooms also like to do a dance with a family member; often this is a parent/child dance, but with different family dynamics, people may choose to dance with a grandparent, an aunt or uncle, a son or daughter, or even a niece or nephew. Some couples get the whole bridal party in on the action! The only limit is your imagination… except, of course, for time. I recommend getting started as soon as possible. It’s better to get your First Dance figured out early, have more time to practice, and then come back for a refresher right before the wedding. No one ever regretted having TOO MUCH time to prepare their First Dance.

FOR THE PARENTS

You’ve spent your entire adult lives “winging it” at every wedding you attend, doing a couple hug & sway slow dances, and maybe getting a little funky during a fast dance or two (or maybe staying 30 feet away from the dance floor at all times!). But now your son or daughter is getting married, and you can’t slink into the crowd and disappear; everyone will be paying attention to you as the hosts, speech givers and guests of honor. Maybe you’ve been saying for years, “We should take dance lessons,” every time you go to a wedding and wish you were dancing more… and now that the big event is in the family, there’s no better motivation.

Just like the engaged couple, as parents of a child getting married, one of the best wedding-related investments you can make are dance lessons. Long after the rehearsal dinner is over and the open bar is closed, you will have the pictures to treasure, but you’ll also have a brand new hobby to enjoy with your spouse. Get your skills in shape for a parent/child dance, and be the life of the party, cutting a rug all night long! Imagine how amazed all your distant cousins will be when they see your smooth moves. Have a blast dancing together at every wedding from here on out, and any weekend in between at socials and parties, reunions, fundraisers, anniversary parties and to live bands and DJs around town.
